Project
Description:
The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was the last of the subsonic, straight-wing fighter-bombers in operational service with the U.S. Air Force. The first XP-84 flew from Muroc Air Force Base (later Edwards AFB) in August 1946 and established a U.S. national speed record of 611 mph a month later. (P stood for pursuit, a designation that changed to F for fighter on June 11, 1948.) From 1949 to 1954, the NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) High-Speed Flight Research Station used one YF-84A for proficiency flying and another (NACA 134, Air Force serial number 45-59490) for research on vortex generators.

The YRF-84F was a prototype of a photo reconnaissance aircraft that first flew in 1952. It was fitted with a new nose and swept wings from earlier versions of the F-84. A YRF-84F with Air Force serial number 51-1828 was delivered to the NACA unit at Edwards Air Force Base, the NACA High-Speed Flight Research Station (soon to be redesignated the NACA High-Speed Flight Station--HSFS), on April 27, 1954, and given the designation "NACA 154." For two years, the aircraft performed pitch-up research to gather data on a common problem with early swept-wing aircraft. It left the HSFS on Oct. 29, 1956. Today the successor to the HSFS is named the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center.
