Project
Description:
The 1980s saw continued activity in systems and aeronautical research. The F-8 DFBW aircraft and the F-111 continued to be flown, the F-111 in the Advanced Fighter Technology Integration (AFTI) program. The AFTI F-16 also began flights in the late 1980s. A Boeing 720 was used in an intentional crash test in December 1984 to test a fire-suppression fuel additive called AMK or anti-misting kerosene, which failed to halt a fire when the aircraft crashed. Two different F-14As flew at Dryden in high angle-of-attack and laminar-flow experiments. Research with remotely piloted vehicles continued with the Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology (HiMAT) project. The 1980s also saw the introduction at Dryden of the F/A-18 aircraft, which slowly replaced the F-104 chase and research aircraft used since the end of the 1950s. Other aircraft shown in the photo gallery include the T-38, B-57, C-140, F-15, and B-52 aircraft, the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, the low Reynolds number vehicle (LRV), and the PIK-20 powered glider.
