Colmbia FirstsMany first-time events have been accomplished by Columbia:o First complete STS test including: stack assembly, flight preparation, launch, orbital flight including reaction control and orbital maneuvering systems and cycling of payload bay doors, reentry, landing, and orbital post flight o First remote manipulator system tests o First deployment of commercial satellites from a Shuttle o First flight of the Spacelab o NASA's first female Shuttle commander, Eileen Collins, flew Columbia during STS- 93, deploying the Chandra X-ray Observatory o First female Japanese astronaut in space, Chiaki Mukai o STS-94 marked the first reflight of the same Shuttle, crew, and payload (following shortened STS-83 mission due to a fuel cell problem) o Only Shuttle to land at White Sands |
