The first of three hypersonic X-43A research vehicles started the final preparations toward a flight in early summer, as the second vehicle arrived at Dryden on Jan. 31.

2001: A math and science odyssey

"NASA 819, this is NASA Odyssey. What is your favorite plane to fly?" asked Nathan Bernard, a 7th grader at Boron Junior-Senior High School. "NASA Odyssey, this is NASA 819. My favorite plane to fly is the F/A-18 Hornet," answered NASA Pilot Jim Barrilleaux.

The title of the Jan. 26 Math and Science Odyssey 2001 workshop was NASA Mission Control — and that's precisely what it felt like for the students. The activity was one of 51 workshops.
