SHARP students found opportunities at Dryden
Special to the X-Press Dryden always is seeking the sharpest young people and this summer they found a bunch through the Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (SHARP). SHARP students must show a high degree of interest in math, science, or engineering. The program is eight weeks long and lets students work with mentors on projects. They also write reports and make oral presentations. The following are some of this summer's SHARP students. o Antony Alvarez is a Tehachapi High School student, who plans to attend college. He worked in the Simulation Branch with mentor Michael Najera. o Liliana Arevalo is a Quartz Hill High School student who plans to attend college and pursue a medical major. At Dryden, she worked in the Safety and Environmental Health Office (input and verification of material safety data sheets into HMMS system) with mentor Dan Mullen. "It's unbelievable, the people and the job," she said. o Markeis Coleman attends Highland High School in Palmdale, and he plans to attend UCLA (Engineering and Applied Science). At Dryden, he worked on the micocomputer support team with mentor Patrick Ray. "It was a really good experience that benefits everyone," he said. o Elisa Espitia, who is a freshman at the University of Texas, Austin, assisted on documentation and the operations manual for the X-33 Advanced Technology Demonstrator test box with mentor Debra Randall. o Alan Gardner is a Mojave High School student who plans to go to college. This summer he worked on configuration control with mentor Kathleen Howell. o Juston Glass is a Tehachapi High School student, who plans a church mission and then attend UCLA. At Dryden, he worked on computer support problems with mentors Patrick Ray and Rick Copeland. o Omar Moreno of Little Rock High School plans to major in physics at the University of California, Berkeley. At Dryden, he built a micro-blowing plate that could reduce drag on the F-15B Flight Test Fixture with mentor Kimberly Ennex. o John R. Weier of Palmdale High School hopes to attend the Naval or Air Force Academy. At Dryden, he worked on flight instrumentation in the pressure calibration lab and environmental lab (building programs to run equipment) with mentor Alma Warner. |
