Co-op students learn Dryden
Special to the X-Press Many college students nationwide seek opportunities to learn about jobs that they hope to have one day. This summer a group of students had first-hand experiences in their chosen fields through the co-operative education program. Each student had to submit a resume, fill out an application and meet strict requirements and have studied at least two terms in a college or university. The following are some of the most enthusiastic co-op students who spent the summer at Dryden. o Jason Clark is an Iowa State student, who is majoring in aerospace engineering and physics. The senior researched actuators on the X-33 Advanced Technology Demonstrator. His mentor was Lou Lintereur. o Jennifer Ann Davis is from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla., and is majoring in aerospace engineering. She worked in the Structures Branch (Code RS) with mentors Didi Olney and Bill Lokos. "Dryden has been a great place to see some really great airplanes and to do some really interesting work," she said. o Alfredo Guzman is a student at San Jose State, San Jose, Calif., where he is a junior majoring in accounting. At Dryden, he is working on accounting issues with mentor Don Simmons. "Coming back here the second time has made me appreciate and understand NASA accounting programs," he said. o Katherine Lau attends the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where she is majoring in mechanical engineering. She worked in Operations Engineering (OE) at Dryden with mentors Tony Ginn and Adam Matsueski. "It's great to be able to get some real working experience and learn about engineering opportunities at Dryden," she said. o Martel Martinez is a student from the University of California, San Diego, where he is studying to be a mechanical engineer. He worked on several projects with his mentor Matt Reaves including the Active Aerolastic Wing (AAW) and Autonomous Formation Flight (AFF). o Joel McLain is a cooperative education student from the University of Arizona, Tuscon, Ariz. The senior is studying to be an aerospace engineer and worked with mentor Tim Moes on the F-18 Systems Research Aircraft. "It's pretty cool. You get to do real-world work and learn independently," he said. o Tarak Pater is a sophomore at the University of Illinois, Champaign, Ill. He is studying aeronautical and astronautical engineering and he worked on the AAW project with mentor John Carter. "Working at Dryden has been a great experience. I look forward to coming back next summer," he said. |
