Carpoolers may see new benefits

A new carpooling tax incentive for Federal Employees means when some people save wear and tear on their vehicles by sharing a ride, they might also be able to save a little wear and tear on their wallets.

Mass transportation incentives began at NASA Headquarters in 1991 and will be available to federal employees of all NASA Centers effective Oct. 1. Vehicles must seat at least six people, which does not count the driver. The vehicle also must be used 80 percent for work and be at least half full of commuters.

A form can be picked up in the Transportation Office, or Human Resources, Management and Development Office, that can result in the exclusion from taxable wages and compensation up to $65 a month, or $780 a year for commuting costs. The forms can be filed at any time, but must be renewed annually.

Program questions can be directed to Chauncey Williams, at ext. 2404, or Code FM, at ext. 3319.

The program was authorized in Executive Order 13150 to reduce federal employees' contribution to air pollution and expand commuting alternatives.
