B-52 workhorse valued in research aircraft stable

This classic photo from 1969 shows the Dryden B-52 No. 008 flying by the HL-10 and its pilot, Bill Dana. The HL-10 lifting body is one of many tales in the storied existence of the B-52 that just had its 45th anniversary.

It was a Southern California kind of day at Boeing Field, Seattle, Wash., on June 11, 1955. There were ideal conditions for RB-52B-0008 to make its maiden production test flight. RB is a designation for a dual-capable reconnaissance/bomber.

At the time no one could have predicted that four and one-half decades in the future this aircraft still would be flying and making significant contributions.

Exploring the final frontier will require new generations of more economical spacecraft that use the latest technologies - including some that have yet to be proven.

Mitigating the risks and reducing the costs of development for these new spacecraft are ongoing with a new generation of experimental vehicles designed to validate propulsion, material, avionics and components that will lead to exponentially less expensive access to space.
