The National Congress on Aviation and Space Education (NCASE) recognized a Dryden employee who helps inspire young people in aviation, math and science studies and assists teachers in adding aerospace to their lessons.

Dryden pilot Ed Lewis received the NCASE Crown Circle Leadership Award for "Evidence of extraordinary accomplishment in a leadership role in Aerospace Education." His contributions were largely made through his work with the Civil Air Patrol, a private non-profit group established by Congress in 1948 as an Air Force auxiliary.

The Civil Air Patrol is an organization of about 60,000 volunteers. Its members learn about aerospace issues and become involved in the organization's three missions. These missions include emergency services (traditionally search and rescue for aircraft and people), train cadets, and teach aerospace education. Cadets range in age from sixth grade to age 20 and they learn about citizenship and core values. Aerospace education emphasizes a strong foundation of math and science.

Lewis won the honor for his continued dedication to teaching aerospace and the enthusiasm, excitement and knowledge that he shares with people.

"For more than 20 years, Ed has con-ducted classes for AOPA (Air-craft Owners and Pilots Association), Civil Air Patrol and the Air National Guard. He supports flight encampments and college and professional educator workshop programs where his expertise and superb instructor abilities have been paramount to the success of the program," the organization wrote about Lewis.

"He has demonstrated an enduring performance and outstanding leadership in aerospace education," NCASE wrote.

Lewis began his involvement in aviation in the Civil Air Patrol cadet program as a teenager. He joined the United States Air Force and became an instructor in jet aircraft. He also served a tour in Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller, instructor, and flight examiner. He flew for Pan American World Airlines for 22 years and at the same time served as a member of the California Air National Guard, where he flew a variety of fixed wing and rotary-winged aircraft.

In the Civil Air Patrol Organization, Lewis has served as Deputy and then State Commander in 1978. He then became Pacific Region Director of Operations and then its commander. The Pacific Region includes Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. He was nominated National Vice Commander in August 1993 and the next year returned to the Pacific Region as its Director of Safety. He was later re-appointed as its Director of operations and subsequently as its Chief, Standardization and Evaluation last December.

He also has assisted with past National Congress for Aerospace Education and the biennial Pacific Region Aerospace Education conferences for many years. NCASE is an annual national event sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol, with active participation of the Federal Aviation Administration and NASA. It brings teachers together from all over the nation to provide them with tools, ideas and materials for teaching aerospace education.
