| Project Description: |
The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was the first supersonic tactical fighter-bomber developed from scratch. The wing was highly swept and incorporated low-speed ailerons and high-speed spoilers for lateral control, and a droop-snoot leading edge.
With the designation F-105B came an engine change to a Pratt & Whitney J75-P-3. Other changes were made in this model too, including the use of a unique type of swept-forward air intake to control the shock-wave and introduction of "area rule" on the fuselage. A total of 75 F-105Bs were built. NASA Flight Research Center had a F-105B (Serial #54-0102) from October 1959 to January 1960 that completed three flights. One of the High-Speed Flight Station's major testing activities supported the Air Force's "Century Series" of fighters and interceptor aircraft, so called because the first of their number was designated the F-100. The F-105B appeared at the base only briefly, so that NASA pilots could familiarize themselves with the characteristics of the aircraft. |
