Description:

This 1949 photograph of the D-558-1 cockpit instrumentation panel illustrates the complex array of dials and switches that confronted the research pilot. The instruments included a Mach meter; altimeter; fuel, oil, and oxygen pressure gages; a landing gear indicator; a gage showing the movable horizontal stabilizer's position; and warning lights for the generator and hydraulic pressure.
