The North American F-100 Super Sabre, the first of the Century-series fighters and the world's first operational fighter capable of level supersonic performance, was evolved from the F-86 Sabre. The leading service aircraft of the 1950s and 1960s were all designed to incorporate features recommended as the results of the "X-planes" testing program. The F-100 was a supersonic aircraft having a low tail and a sharply swept wing mounted on a long, rakish fuselage.
