Minority University

Program Description

Minority University Research and Education Division (MURED) was established to increase NASA's responsiveness to Federal mandates related to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Universities. The Dryden Minority University Program is managed by the Equal Opportunity Programs Office. The overall purpose of Minority University Programs is to increase the number of minority students in science and engineering and to increase the participation of minority universities in NASA's grants and small business awards. MURED Awards are comprised of the following four categories:

Institutional Science, Engineering, and Technology (ISET) Awards

University Research Centers (URC)
  • Increase the research capability of minority institutions in NASA fields.
Institutional Research Awards (IRA)
  • Improves academic, scientific, and technology infrastructure. Broadens the NASA-related science and technology base at minority institutions.
Network Resources and Training Sites (NRTS)
  • Increases minorities access to science and technology by improving the computer network infrastructure of minority institutions.
Model Institution for Excellence (MIE)
  • Ensures a higher number of students seeking to complete an advanced level in science, engineering, and mathematics technology.

Principal Investigator (PI) Awards

Faculty Awards for Research (FAR)
  • Provides opportunities for minority institutions to propose basic and applied research and analysis relevant to any of the five NASA Strategic Enterprises. The FAR program supports faculty-driven research at HBCUs and OMUs that is relevant to the Enterprises. The research areas of strategic interest to NASA are: Earth Science, Human Exploration and Development of Space, Space Science, Aerospace Technology, and Biology and Physical Science.
NASA Administrator's Fellowship Program (NAFP)
  • Enhances the professional development of NASA employees and MSET faculty of minority-serving institutions. Ultimate goal is to increase the capability of minority-serving institutions to respond to NASA's overall research and development mission.
NASA/NAFEO Louis Stokes Professional Leadership Program
  • Assists HBCUs and OMUs in strengthening the delivery and management of NASA-sponsored MSET programs.

Mathematics and Science (M&S) Education Programs

Undergraduate Scholars Program (USP)
  • Develops through minority institutions a pool of talented scientists and engineers in fields related to NASA's mission.
Harriet G. Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship
  • Provides underrepresented full-time graduate students' financial support for research-based education leading to a doctoral degree.
Precollege Awards for Excellence
  • Precollege student programs that foster science and mathematics competencies. Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, and Technology Awards for Teacher Education Program (MASTAP)
  • Increases number and percentage of state-certified mathematics, science, or technology teachers on all levels of hard-to-staff schools. NASA supports the efforts of U.S. colleges and universities to develop diverse and exemplary education programs for research-based mathematics, science, and technology at the pre-college level for teacher preparation and curriculum enhancement projects.
Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA)
  • K-12 program using NASA-developed curricula to enhance awareness of math and science disciplines for historically underrepresented students.

Partnership Awards

Partnership Award for the Integration of Research (PAIR)
  • Provides undergraduates opportunities to conduct discipline-related research; enhances MSET curricular and faculty development by integrated NSA mission-related research and technology. Curriculum Improvement Partnership Award (CIPA)
  • Focuses on curriculum improvement and enhancing teaching strategies; targets MSI's receiving limited funding from NASA.
